Agartala Municipal Council

Situated in the lap of Mother Nature, Agartala is more of a historical city that any other place in Tripura. The historical sites and buildings and the ancient monuments and sites which have been here in the city since ages prove the existence of the city since the ancient times. Agartala is a well planned city in Tripura and the whole of Northeast. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the king of Tripura, turned Agartala city into a developed one initiating many developmental works in the city and reorganized the town in a planned manner with buildings, new roads and markets. And one such great work done by the Maharaja was the formation of the Agartala Municipality.

During the reign of Maharaja Chandra Manikya, Agartala Municipality was constituted in 1871 AD. The Agartala Municipal Council is responsible for the smooth running and the development of the city. The Agartala Municipal Council is a conscientious organization that works for the upliftment of the lives of the people here by providing them endless services. The Corporation presently is headed by a Mayor and a Deputy Mayor along with the council of elected ward commissioners. All these departments work in coordination for smooth running of the Municipal Corporation and the city as a whole.

Important Chronological events of Agartala Municipality

1871: Agartala Municipality was established within area of 3 sq. miles with a population of 875.

1874: Municipal regulations were introduced with provision of taxation.

1897: Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya re-organised the entire administration.

1978: Agartala Municipality was categorized into 10 wards. The municipal area was enlarged to 10.94 it was further extended to an area of 15.81 sq.k.m and was divided in to 13 wards.

2000: After the general municipal election in 2000 another municipal council came into power with 17 elected members and 3 nominated members. The municipal area was 16.012 sq. k.m..

2004: Agartala Municipal Council further extended to 62.02 sq km with a population of 368,493 persons.
