Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary

Located amid lush greenery in the south east corner of Tripura, the Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary would please one with its varied species of flora and fauna. Established in 1988 the sanctuary spreads across an area of 390 sq kms. Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal destination for tourists interested in eco tourism.

Location of the Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is located in the hilly terrains around 100 kms from Agartala. The name of the sanctuary has been derived from the Gumti River that originates from Dumboor in India and enters Bangladesh where it is known by the name of Padma. There is a vast water reservoir near the sanctuary. This water reservoir spreads almost 300 sq kms of an area and attracts several resident and migratory water birds.

Flora and Fauna in Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary

The Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to many floral species of medical, therapeutically and botanical species. Many botanical researchers visit the sanctuary to have a look and study the different floral species. There are also a number of animal species found in the sanctuary like elephants, sambar, bison,  barking deer, sarow and wild goat and many other animals and reptiles. While in the sanctuary you can also spot different residential and migratory birds like the lesser adjutant stork, darter and so on.

How to reach Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary

Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Agartala. Agartala is connected with other cities by airways, railways and roadways.

By Air: There is Agartala airport located in Agartala which is  connected by regular flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati.

By Train: The nearest railhead to Agartala is Kumrghat, which is 140 kilometers away from Agartala.

By Road: Agartala is connected with other cities by roadways. Once in Agartala local transport like taxis, auto rickshaws and  bus service could be availed to reach the sanctuary.
